John graduated, cum laude, from the Creighton University School of Law in 1974, and from then until January 2014 he was continuously engaged in the private practice of law. The last 33-plus years of his nearly 40 years of practice was with Erickson | Sederstrom, P.C., L.L.O, from which he retired on December 31, 2013. During his tenure with Erickson | Sederstrom, John chaired the firm’s Litigation Division for more than 10 years, and he represented clients in lawsuits in the state and federal courts of Nebraska and other jurisdictions, handling civil jury and non-jury trials and appeals. Before and during his tenure with the firm, John was an Adjunct Professor/Lecturer in Trial Practice at his alma mater.
John has assumed strong leadership roles in the activities of the Omaha Bar Association (president, 1990-1991) and the Nebraska State Bar Association (president, 1992-1993; Executive Council, 1983-1989; and House of Delegates, 1981-1993). He has been a member of the Nebraska State Bar Commission since 2008 and, from 1996 to 1999, he served as a member of the American Bar Association's Commission on Lawyer Assistance Programs.
In 1998 he was the recipient of the Creighton University School of Law Alumni Merit Award, and in the same year he received the Nebraska State Bar Foundation's Distinguished Service Award.
John is a member of the Nebraska State Bar Association, the Nebraska Association of Trial Attorneys, The Omaha Bar Association, the National Academy of Distinguished Neutrals, the Nebraska Mediation Association, the Nebraska State Bar Commission, and he is a Fellow of the Nebraska State Bar Foundation.
